Using Google Trends for Product Research

Pyratrend Team

Google Trends is one of the most underrated free tools in a dropshipper’s arsenal. It shows you exactly what people are searching for, when they’re searching, and where. Used correctly, it can validate product demand, help you time launches, and spot rising categories months before they peak.

Google Trends doesn’t give you raw search volume numbers. Instead, it shows relative interest over time on a 0-100 scale, where 100 represents peak popularity for the given period. It also provides:

  • Interest over time — 12-month to multi-year trend lines
  • Regional interest — Which states or countries search most
  • Related queries — What else people search for alongside your term
  • Rising terms — Queries that are gaining momentum fast

Step 1: Validate Before You Invest

Before spending a dollar on ads, plug your product’s main keyword into Google Trends. Look at the 12-month view:

  • Rising steadily — Good sign. Demand is growing.
  • Flat with seasonal bumps — Normal for established products. Check if the seasonal window matches your launch timing.
  • Declining — Red flag. Interest is fading. Skip unless you have a strong reason to believe otherwise.
  • Spike-and-crash — Classic fad pattern. The wave has already crested.

Step 2: Compare Multiple Keywords

Google Trends lets you compare up to 5 terms side by side. Use this to understand which phrasing people actually use. For example:

  • “posture corrector” vs. “back posture corrector” vs. “posture brace”
  • The term with the highest and most stable line is the one people actually search for

Always optimize your product page and ads around the highest-volume variant.

Step 3: Check Regional Demand

Scroll down to “Interest by region” and look at the map. If you’re targeting the US market, check which states show the strongest interest. A product that’s popular in California but rarely searched in Texas might need different ad targeting.

Step 4: Spot Seasonal Windows

Some products are gifts for Christmas. Others spike in January (fitness), June (outdoor gear), or back-to-school season (August). Use Google Trends’ multi-year view to:

  • Identify the exact months your product peaks
  • Time your ad spend to ramp up 4-6 weeks before peak
  • Reduce ad spend during off-peak months

At the bottom of the page, Google Trends shows “Related queries” — terms people also search for. The “Rising” tab is gold. It shows queries gaining search volume fast. These often indicate:

  • New product angles (“wireless posture corrector” vs. “posture corrector”)
  • Emerging features people want
  • Complementary products you can add to your store

Google Trends shows search intent, but not sales volume or advertising activity. For a complete product validation picture, layer Google Trends with:

  • Pyratrend — Checks how many Shopify stores sell the product, how many run ads, and whether the market is saturated
  • Facebook Ad Library — Shows if and how competitors are advertising the product
  • AliExpress Dropshipping Center — Shows actual order volumes and sourcing costs

Google Trends tells you if people want a product. The other tools tell you whether there’s money to be made selling it.

Mistake 1: Checking the Wrong Timeframe

A 7-day view can be misleading. Always check at least 12 months. Better yet, 5 years if the data is available. You want to see the full seasonal picture, not a weekly blip.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Seasonality

“Holiday gifts” spike in November and flatline in January. That’s not a decline — it’s seasonality. Use the multi-year view to distinguish between seasonal patterns and actual decline.

Mistake 3: Using Broad Terms

“Lamp” is too broad. “LED desk lamp with USB port” is too narrow. Find the middle ground: “desk lamp USB” or “rechargeable desk lamp.” This is the search volume sweet spot.

The “Related topics” tab shows broader interest areas. If you search “posture corrector” and related topics include “back pain relief,” you know the audience has a medical/wellness mindset — which influences how you should market the product.

Before launching any product, verify:

  • Trend line is rising or stable over 12 months (not declining)
  • Regional demand matches your target market (US-focused)
  • Seasonal patterns are understood and accounted for
  • Related queries reveal complementary product ideas
  • Broad interest validates the product category exists

Google Trends takes 5 minutes to check. In exchange, it can save you from spending hundreds on a product nobody wants. Use it for every product you consider launching.
